London Charing Cross station is evacuated after fire alarm

Hundreds of people were tonight evacuated from Charing Cross station in central London sparking travel chaos.

The incident unfolded shortly before 9pm when a fire alarm was heard through the station, with officials failing to tell panicking passengers why they were ordered to leave.

National Rail said services would be ‘delayed or revised’ following the alert with travellers urged to stay away.

During the emergency trains were diverted away from the station leaving passengers stranded.

The rail operator’s website said: ‘Fire alarms sounding at London Charing Cross means trains will be delayed or revised. This is expected to continue until 21:30.

‘The fire alarms at London Charing Cross have been activated, and the station is being evacuated.’

Witnesses took to Twitter with one posting a picture of a sign at the entrance reading: ‘Emergency. Do not enter.’

Anahid Basmajian wrote: ‘Anyone know what’s happening at Charing Cross? We’ve been told to leave the station’.’

Another said: ‘Was evacuated. We were evacuated off a train waiting to leave.’

The station later reopened and the fire alarm was declared to be false. 

Southeastern wrote on Twitter: “Reported to be a false alarm, will reopen as soon as all clear given.”
