A 26-year-old passenger is fighting for his life in hospital after a high-speed crash overnight.

The 26-year-old man sustained major injuries when a 24-year-old driver lost control of a vehicle on Chung Wah Terrace in Palmerston, Darwin’s capital, about 12.45am on Saturday.

The passenger suffered major injuries and remains in a critical but stable condition at the Royal Darwin Hospital, Nine News reported.

The 24-year-old driver was also taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital, but with minor injuries.

He remains in hospital under police guard.

Northern Territory police said alcohol wasn’t ruled out as a factor in the crash.

‘We haven’t confirmed it at this stage, but it certainly will be a focus of the investigation,’ Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Casey told Nine News.

Debris from the vehicle was strewn across the road for most of Saturday, forcing the police to close the road.

The force of the crash was so severe, debris was also found in residential properties.

‘That’s typically what we see in high speed crashes, debris will get spread over a large area,’ Sergeant Casey said.

Sergeant Casey said the crash rate in the Northern Territory already proved ‘appalling’ in 2018.

‘It’s a tragic start to the year. We’ve got two people so far have died on the roads and there’s a number of people in a serious condition in hospitals throughout the Territory,’ he said.

A young woman was hit by a car on Friday night, in a separate incident.

The driver failed to stop and fled from the scene.

Police identified the car on Saturday and the driver handed themselves in at midday.
