Melania Trump wears $4,000 to welcome the Polish first couple to the White House

Melania Trump went for a classic look to welcome the Polish first lady and president, cutting a monochrome figure in a $3,980 Gucci coat.

The first lady, 48, and her husband, 72, greeted Polish Polish President Andrzej Duda, 46, and his wife Agata Kornhauser-Duda, 46, at the White House on Tuesday.

Melania’s off-white Gucci coat featured a navy blue lapel and cuffs. She let the simple design do all the talking, teaming it with just a pair of pointed-toe pumps.

The double-breasted coat, which is made of wool and has long sleeves, no doubt kept Melania quite warm in D.C.’s 80-degree weather.

Melania later sat down in the Oval Office with her husband and their guests, revealing a navy blue skirt or dress worn under her buttoned-up coat.

She kept the rest of her look simple, wearing her hair in her signature blowout. On the cosmetics side, Melania remained loyal to her trademark smoky eye and French manicure.

Her husband, meanwhile, went for a dark suit paired with a button-down white shirt and a striped tie. Just like his wife, he stuck to two colors for his outfit, perhaps taking a page out of Melania’s style book.

Melania and the Polish first lady were scheduled to have lunch in the White House’s Red Room and attend a press conference in the East Room.

The Polish first lady, too, went for a two-toned outfit. She posed in front of the White House in black pants, a black top, and a white blazer cinched at the waist by a black belt.

Her husband, meanwhile, donned a dark suit along with a white button-down shirt and a blue tie.

Agata Kornhauser-Duda created a stir last year when she went to shake Melania’s hand, leaving President Trump hanging because he thought the extended hand was for him.

The U.S. and Poland’s presidential couples were shaking hands in July last year before Trump’s speech in front of a crowd in Warsaw, the Polish capital.

Poland’s first lady shook hands with Trump and then all four of them lined up for a photograph.

She then moved with an extended hand toward Melania, but Trump, standing nearer, thought the handshake was for him again and reached out to her. He flashed a somewhat startled and disappointed look when the Polish first lady shook Melania’s hand, not his.

Quickly sizing up the situation, she gave Trump a second handshake and he gave her a pardoning smile.

The Poland’s first couple’s visit to the U.S. was announced in August.

The Polish president’s aide Krzysztof Szczerski said that Duda’s first visit to the White House will include one-on-one talks with Trump on security in Central Europe and on strengthening the U.S. military presence in the region, which is worried about intensifying Russian military activity. Poland has been seeking an increase in the number of U.S. troops stationed in its territory since early 2017.

Wider talks will address trade ties and the partnership between the two NATO allies.

Duda will also meet with U.S. senators and throw a party on the occasion of 100 years of Poland’s independence, which was regained thanks to the support from President Woodrow Wilson.

A statement from the White House said that the presidents ‘will address ways to strengthen the United States-Poland strategic partnership’ and plan to discuss ‘trade, military, and security matters’.

Poland was Trump’s first destination during his European trip last year and Poland’s right-wing government attaches great importance to the relationship. One sore point is the visa requirement for Poles going to the U.S. but Szczerski did not confirm that the matter will be discussed.

U.S. First Lady Melania Trump will host her Polish counterpart Agata Kornhauser-Duda for a meeting.
