A mother-of-seven, 38, facing a string of petty drug and theft charges has been handed a jail sentence for trying to steal $750 worth of goods from Bunnings. 

Talita Joy Lamont on Wednesday pleaded guilty in the Caloundra Magistrates Court to attempting to steal from the hardware store, The Courier Mail reported.  

The court heard the 38-year-old mother and grandmother was charged with a total of 14 offences, with the bungled Bunnings theft  ahead of Christmas being the most serious.

In addition to trying to steal from the hardware store, Lamont was also charged with stealing four cans of rum from inside a pokie room at the Landsborough Hotel.

She was also charged with stealing from a laundromat and being in possession of drugs and property after police found her with scales and a bag of marijuana, which she claimed to have found at the beach.

Other charges the 38-year-old faced included driving without a licence after she was disqualified by a court order, which she claimed was to buy groceries for her family. 

She was also on probation at the time of some of her offending, had breached bail conditions, and had previously failed to appear in court.   

In addition to trying to steal from the hardware store, Lamont was also charged with stealing four cans of rum from inside the Landsborough Hotel. She was confronted in the pokies room

Her defence lawyer told the court his client had suffered a stroke, which resulted in memory loss and brain damage which contributed to her poor compliance with court orders.  

She was given a head sentence of four months for the attempted theft charge, and a number of three month and one month concurrent sentences for the other charges. 

Lamont also received a further one month cumulative sentence for her failure to appear in court, which brought her total prison time to four months. 

She was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a livence for two years.
