Multiple Houston police officers are shot during an ‘encounter’ with a suspect

  • Five Houston police officers were shot Monday afternoon after an ‘encounter’ with a suspect 
  • The officers were reportedly serving a narcotics warrant when shots were fired 
  • One suspect has been shot dead, while another was thought to be barricaded inside 
  •  Three of the officers are in stable conditions, while the other two are critical 
  • This comes three years after the 2016 Dallas police shooting that left five officers dead and nine injured  

Five Houston police officers have been shot while serving a warrant on a drug charge. 

Houston police confirmed one suspect dead, while SWAT officers remained on the scene to determine if another suspect was inside a home.

As of 7.30pm local time, police said the scene was secure.  

The officers were struck with gunfire following an ‘encounter’ with a suspect in southeast Houston around 5pm Monday, authorities said.     

Joe Gamaldi, president of the Houston Police Officers’ Union, said three of the officers are stable, while the other two are in critical condition.

The officers are being treated at Memorial Hermann Medical Center and one was transported by helicopter. 

One woman Jasmine Castro lives nearby and said she heard about 15 rounds of gunfire in the neighborhood, according to ABC Action News.   

The woman also said she saw an officer on the ground.  

Undercover officers were part of the group who were serving the warrant on Monday evening.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott called the shooting a ‘horrific attack on police officers’ in a statement. 

‘This evening’s horrific attack on police officers is a solemn reminder of the service and sacrifice our brave men and women in law enforcement make every day to keep us safe,’ Abbott said. 

Harris County Sheriff’s deputies and ATF agents are assisting at the scene.

Houston mayor Sylvester Turner asked for prayers for the several injured officers. 

Police chief Art Acevedo tweeted: ‘We have had several officers shot please pray for officers on the way to the scene now more information to follow.’ 

‘HPD responding to a scene at 7800 Harding where officers have been struck with gunfire following an encounter with a suspect,’ Houston Police tweeted.  ‘Officers are en route to the hospital. Please avoid the area and yield for emergency vehicles.’ 

Today’s tragedy resembles the 2016 Dallas shooting that saw Micah Xavier Johnson ambush and kill five officers while injuring nine others. 

That shooting  was the deadliest incident for US law enforcement since the September 11 terrorist attacks.
