NSW share bike companies could be hit with hefty fines

  • Share bike companies will be fined if they are not cleaned up off the street
  • Next month’s state budget will provide funding for ‘docking bays’ in NSW
  • Ten thousand bikes are estimated to have been dumped across Sydney
  • Fines for the littered bikes could reach up to $2500 from the council

Share bike companies will be hit with massive fines in an effort to prevent more dockless bicycle chaos.

According to the The Saturday Telegraph, next month’s State Budget will provide funding for councils to apply for ‘docking bays’.

The state cabinet signed off on the plan to create space for bike stations, which will be placed in prime locations.

Although the amount hasn’t been confirmed, it is understood the fines could be up to $2500 for each bike left behind

Cities such as New York and London have already created the docking bays to prevent the metal carnage of the share bikes.

Up to 10,000 bikes have been dumped across New South Wales since share bike schemes hit the streets.

Pathways, beaches and roads have been littered with the carcasses of the broken down bikes.

New laws will give councils the power to fine share bike companies which don’t clean up their dumped bikes.

The incentive for share bike companies to retrieve their property is minimal as they are able to make money from the bike subscription

Although the amount is yet to be confirmed, it is understood the fines could be up to $2500 for each bike left behind.

The current incentive for share bike companies to retrieve their property is minimal as they are able to make money from bike subscriptions.

The bicycles are also made at a low cost and are easy to produce in bulk.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance said this will put the pressure on the companies for them to be removed.

‘While we encourage riders to use and enjoy share bikes, we urge everybody, including the operators, to have a responsible approach,’ Mr Constance said.
