Pointless double-yellow lines are just two feet long

Bungling workmen have painted double yellow lines just two feet long on a quiet residential street, baffling homeowners.

The lines were painted onto the road in in Hayle, Cornwall, by contractors when a new patch of tarmac was laid after work on a gas main.

Following regulations the workmen repainted the double yellow lines –  even though the rest have long since disappeared.

Locals say they are ‘baffled’ by the lines and have no idea what will happen if they park on them.

A spokesman from Cornwall Council said: ‘The lines in question were put in place by Wales and West’s contractors following the installation of a new gas service.

‘The new lines replace lines which had faded on the piece of road that they have reinstated.’

Last month a pair of double yellow lines mysteriously appeared in a narrow alleyway – not even wide enough to fit a car.

The lines caused a lot of confusion for passers-by who use the alley, running between two shops.

The paved alleyway, just off Walsgrave Road, in Stoke, runs between an indoor market but it remains a mystery as to who painted the lines in the first place.

Lyn Dowling, 63, said: ‘I shop in this area about one a week and I recently noticed the new double yellow lines.

‘I thought how ridiculous it was, you can’t even fit a car in that alleyway, I had to take a picture.

‘It’s got to be the narrowest road with double yellow I’ve ever seen.

‘If you managed to get your vehicle in there, it’s only just over 6 feet wide, you couldn’t even open the doors to get out.’

Coventry City Council have confirmed that they are not responsible for the double yellow lines and the general convenience shop, to the right of the alleyway, are unaware as to how the lines came to be there.

A spokesperson for the council said: ‘The alleyway in question is not an adopted highway and the Council has not been involved in the issue. It is a private matter for the road owner.

‘When we do put double yellow lines on an adopted road there is a legal process we have to follow, including advertising the changes, so road users can have their say.’
