Toddler who fell in Sydney pool makes miraculous recovery

A toddler left fighting for life after she fell into a backyard swimming pool has made a miraculous recovery.

The 19-month-old girl is well on her way to making a full recovery after she was pulled out of the water several minutes later by her distraught father, who tried to save her life as paramedics rushed to the Greenacre home.

Her parents released an exuberant statement, gushing with thanks to the police, paramedics and the hospital ‘for their incredible efforts to help save our angel’.

‘This has been an incredibly difficult time for our family – an experience which has only brought us closer and stronger together. In the end it came down to a miracle,’ the statement read.

‘Our gorgeous girl fought on and won.

‘She is being closely monitored and receiving much care until she’s back on her feet, chasing after her older siblings.’

And while their elation was evident, the Sydney family said they have learned a very serious lesson through their ordeal.

‘To every parent and carer, time is precious. One short moment can change your life, you can never be too safe,’ they said.

‘With this we urge you to learn the right measures in an emergency.

‘There is nothing worse than the feeling of helplessness and pain.

‘You find yourself sitting and watching your child in a hospital bed knowing there is nothing else you can do to help this precious soul. All you have is prayer.’

On Thursday, the young girl somehow managed to get past a metal pool fence and fall into the water as her parents were distracted getting ready to go out.

Her father didn’t stop giving his little girl CPR when emergency services arrived at the Greenacre home and worked with them to bring her around after about 30 minutes.

‘I heard the mother screaming. I looked out the window and saw the dad trying to give the child CPR and got all emotional and you know it didn’t look good at the time,’ a neighbour told Seven News.

‘I was amazed to see the father, he just kept going and going.’

Finally she was safe to move to Westmead Children’s Hospital by ambulance in a conscious but critical condition.

‘The parents were on the scene, they were preparing to go out for the day, it appears they’ve momentarily taken their eyes off the child,’ Inspector Matthew West said.

Police immediately began an investigation into how the toddler got into the pool and if anyone was at fault, starting with whether the pool fence was compliant.
