The world’s best golfers have gathered on Long Island for the US Open as the year’s second major returns to Shinnecock Hills for the first time since 2004. 

There is a four-way tie for the lead, with Americans Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Daniel Berger and Tony Finau locked on three over par. 

Justin Rose is poised just one shot further back, but Phil Mickelson, after a dramatic moment of petulance on Saturday – his 48th birthday – is out of the running.
