2024 Logie Awards: Guy Sebastian and Jess Mauboy divide viewers with their ‘eulogy’ to John Farnham following courageous cancer battle: ‘He’s not dead!

The Logies paid tribute to one of Australia’s greatest icons on Sunday night.

David Campbell took the stage to wax lyrical about John Farmham, listing the singer’s career highs and many awards.

‘He sold over six million albums, had a career that spanned 60 years and is one of the best live performers the world has ever seen’ David said.

‘We want to acknowledge John’s wife Jill, his sons, Robert and James, and his close friend, Glenn Wheatley’s wife Gaynor and their son, Tim Wheatley. But, most importantly tonight, it’s about celebrating you, John. You are an Aussie icon. You are the voice, mate’ he added.

David then introduced singers Guy Sebastian and Jess Mauboy, who belted out one of Farnham’s greatest hits, You’re The Voice.

Viewers at home found the tribute in poor taste, with many commenting on X that while John has been battling cancer, he hasn’t died – and the on stage accolades made it appear the pop star had passed.

‘I get John had a doco and had some health issues recently but he hasn’t passed away. Also this would be better at the arias you know the music awards of Australia’ wrote one viewer on X.

‘RIP John Farnham didn’t know he passed’ joked another, with someone else saying, ‘OMG FARNSY IS STILL ALIVE. This is not a eulogy’.

‘Look. I get Farnsy is a national treasure, but he’s not dead. Can we please stop acting like he’s dead?’ someone else posted.

Others were happy with the tribute, with one person writing,  ‘I think it’s better to celebrate our amazingly talented icons whilst they’re still alive!! We love you John.’

‘Jessica Mauboy you are the voice!!! That was perfection’ wrote another with one more chiming in, ‘It’s fitting to have Jess and Guy sing a John Farnham tribute’.

In August 2023, Farnham revealed he’s cancer-free, 12 months after having mouth surgery in 2022.

Farnham’s family had previously given updates on behalf of the Australian music legend, following the August 2022 procedure.

Speaking on Sunrise, John’s son Robert said his father was ‘doing fantastic’ after a 12-hour surgery for throat cancer.

The That’s Freedom hitmaker was additionally hospitalised after he developed a chest infection following surgery to remove a cancerous tumour in his mouth.

Farnham is ‘unlikely’ to ever perform again after undergoing a marathon surgery to remove the tumour from his mouth.

The operation, carried out by 26 medical staff, also saw a major part of his jaw removed.

Farnham had only discovered he had the cancerous growth in his mouth after his wife Jill insisted on taking him to the doctor for a check up when he developed a persistent mouth ulcer.

In April, John reveled he is releasing his own candid memoir titled The Voice Inside, over a year after his surgery for mouth cancer.
