The 2025 Grand National will be held at Aintree on Saturday as the most popular horse racing event of the year makes a highly-anticipated return.

While punters and jockeys alike will be desperate for victory on the day, there are plenty of famous faces hoping that their horses cross the line in first place.

One of those is legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who will be cheering on Hitman – who is a huge outsider to win the race at 150/1.

But if it does pull off a shock victory, it will win part of a prize pot that totals an eye-watering £1million.

According to research from BoyleSports, horses under Ferguson’s ownership have banked £6.8m in prize money.

Hitman has three wins from 23 runs so far this season, with an impressive 10 second-placed finishes to add to that.

Ferguson also has another horse in the race that immediately follows the Grand National – with L’Eau Du Sud running in the Rosconn Group Maghull Novices’ Chase at 5pm.

Ferguson’s horse is the favourite to win that race, as it features just six other competitors in total.

That horse is trained by Dan Skelton and will be ridden by Harry Skelton with a total of £111,684 to be won, of which the victor will take home £67,524.

Earlier in the day, he also has Monmiral running the William Hill Top Price Guarantee Handicap Hurdle at 1:20pm.

The Scot will be seeking to add to his win at this year’s Cheltenham Festival, which saw Caldwell Potter, a galloping grey bought in February 2024 for £630,000, land his first win at the prestigious festival in the Jack Richards Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, the legendary Red Devils coach could not hide his delight.

‘I think the jumping won it,’ he claimed. ‘What can I say? Great horse, it was a bonus.

‘Winning here last year with two was fantastic and doing it again this year is fantastic. Thank you very much.’

The main event of this weekend is part of a meet that lasts three days and gets underway on Thursday.

This year’s Grand National is set to start at 4pm on Saturday April 4.

It will last for around 10 minutes – encompassing the famous fences of Becher’s Brook, Canal Turn and Valentine’s Brook which will be jumped twice.
