In a press conference this morning, Assistant Commissioner Neil Gaughan questioned the country’s appetite for illegal drugs, saying community discussion is needed if the reliance is to change.

‘Why is it that we have such a demand for drugs in this country?’ he said.

‘It’s 2018 we need to seriously have a discussion as a community as to what we can do to actually stop the demand. Until we do that these record seizures are going to continue.’

The haul has an estimated street value of $270 million.

The Australian Border Force said the methamphetamine was discovered ‘secreted in heavy steel machinery’ inside an Adelaide-bound cargo ship following a tip off to the South Australian Police.

On board was 313 clip seal bags containing a white crystalline substance which was later revealed to be methamphetamine.

It comes just two months after 1.2 tonnes of ice was discovered in a record-breaking bust in Geraldton, Western Australia which is thought to be the biggest in Australia’s history.

The seizure resulted in the arrest of eight men and had a street value of more than $1billion.

It is believed the previous record for an ice seizure in South Australia was set in April last year when police discovered more than 119kg at a bikie associated rural property.
