60 Minutes slammed for airing ‘disgusting’ interview with Britney Spears’ ex-husband Kevin Federline

60 Minutes Australia has been slammed after airing a ‘disgusting’ and ‘invasive’ trailer teasing an interview with Keven Federline.

Channel 9 revealed they had secured an exclusive interview with Britney Spears’ ex-husband and their two children Sean, 16, and Jayden, 15, set to air on Sunday.

But legions of her fans have protested, claiming the channel is ‘trying to profit’ from the 40-year-old pop sensations’ well-publicised difficulties.

Staying out of it: ‘The boys, the boys, the boys. I had to worry about them,’ he said while leaning back in a chair. ‘I couldn’t get involved’

In the interview, Federline delved into his lack of public support for his ex-wife’s battle to end her conservatorship.

The 44-year-old former backup dancer said he ultimately didn’t get involved in her attempts to end the arrangement because he was focused on raising their sons, though the teaser doesn’t make it clear why he thought the choices were incompatible.

He previously revealed that his sons had skipped her wedding to Sam Asghari and hadn’t seen her in months, which he claimed was partly due to semi-nude photos she posted to Instagram since the end of her conservatorship.

But fans have slammed the channel for platforming Federline who previously posted a series of clips of their young sons arguing with their mother.

‘You are really embarrassing to do all this, to create these feuds and to make a profit. SHAME,’ wrote one.

‘A woman who went through hell and back, and you want to drag her down AGAIN?’ added another.

‘Nah ya making this about ratings as a woman is trying her best. Shame 60 mins,’ wrote another.

Torn up: Federline looked emotional as he said he was affected by Britney's struggles against her conservatorship. 'I was mortified for her. I really was,' he said, adding, 'I still feel bad'

‘This is DISGUSTING! After all she went through. You should be ashamed of yourselves. That’s not a ‘feud’ or gossip, it’s someone’s life. Specially listening to that gold digger, who’s only concerned that he will not get any of Britney’s money anymore,’ tweeted one.

In the brief clip, Federline admitted that he felt ‘mortified’ for his ex-wife after she was placed under a conservatorship for her person and her estate for 13 years.

‘The boys, the boys, the boys. I had to worry about them,’ he said while leaning back in a chair and wearing a blue button-up shirt over a black T-shirt. ‘I couldn’t get involved.’

Sean and Jayden have apparently become disengaged from their mother recently, and they were not among the guests at her wedding in June.

‘Although the boys will not be in attendance, Kevin and the boys are happy for Britney and wish her and Sam all the best going forward, Federline’s attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan told TMZ in a statement at the time.

Earlier in the teaser, Federline looked emotional as he said he was affected by seeing Britney’s struggles against her conservatorship.

‘I was mortified for her. I really was,’ he said, adding, ‘I still feel bad.’

Later in the clip, Federline shared a clipped summation of his brief marriage to the Toxic singer.

‘It was amazing — until it wasn’t,’ he said.

The couple only dated for three months in 2004 before they got engaged in July of that year, and they were married by September.

Britney gave birthday to Sean in September of 2005, and Jayden followed around a year later in 2006, but the pop star filed for divorce in November 2006, with it being finalized the following year.

In the short interview teaser, Kevin was also seen leaning back in a chair outdoors while joined on his left by Jayden and on his right by his son Kaleb, who he shares with his ex Shar Jackson.

During an impassioned court appearance prior to the end of her conservatorship, Spears had claimed that she hadn’t been allowed to drive her own car and that she was prohibited from having her contraceptive IUD removed in order to have a child with her then-boyfriend Sam Asghari.

In an interview from August with ITV, Federline claimed that ‘The boys have decided they are not seeing her right now,’ which he attributed to some of her raunchy post-conservatorship Instagram posts.

‘It’s been a few months since they’ve seen her. They made the decision not to go to her wedding,’ he explained.

But the singer swiftly responded to Federline’s claims and suggested the estrangement began before her risqué posts.

‘It saddens me to hear that my ex husband has decided to discuss the relationship between me and my children,’ Spears wrote on Instagram August 6. ‘As we all know, raising teenage boys is never easy for anyone … it concerns me the fact that the reason is based on my Instagram … it was LONG before Instagram … I gave them every thing … Only one word: HURTFUL.’

In his own statement, Asghari also denied Federline’s claims while including a barb about his work history.

‘The boys are very smart and will be 18 soon to make their own decisions and may eventually realize the ‘tough’ part was having a father who hasn’t worked much in over 15 years as a role model,’ he wrote.

In August,  Federline posted a series of clips of their young sons arguing with their mother, which was branded ‘cruel’ and a ‘violation of privacy’ by Spears’ lawyer Mathew Rosengart

‘I can not sit back and let my sons be accused in this way after what they’ve been through,’ the father of six wrote.

In 2019, Federline was granted 70 percent custody of their sons while Spears was downgraded to 30 percent, according to TMZ.

Federline also defended Spears’ estranged father Jamie – a former building contractor who controlled every aspect of her life during a 13-year conservatorship, which ended on November 12.

‘100% I feel like he saved her back then,’ Federline said.

‘I saw a man that really cared, and wanting everything to be okay…I would absolutely welcome Jamie Spears back in the boys’ lives.’

Federline’s two-year marriage to Spears ended in July 2007, and six months later she was placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold.
