6,000-square-foot Victorian New York mansion with 10 bedrooms hits the market for just $50,000

An historic Victorian mansion with 10-bedrooms is being sold for just $50,000 in a central New York city, but the historic property will  go to the buyer with the best plan to remedy the fixer upper.

The 6,000-square-foot home spans three-stories and was once owned philanthropist James Seymour after the vintage home was built in 1861 in Auburn.

Seymour built the house at 113 North Street at the age of 70 and it was later owned by Dunn and McCarthy Shoes founder, Charles A. McCarthy.

The red brick mansion is equipped with unique features like a hand-crafted curved staircase, hardwood floors, original woodwork throughout the home, pocket doors, built-in cabinetry and four marble fireplaces, real estate agent Michael DeRosa told Fox Business.

It is also placed on nearly one acre of land and includes relics of the past, like a two-story carriage house on the property.

DeRosa said: ‘The quality of construction, style of architecture and historical significance contribute to a historic property’s value in the same way that an artist, period and provenance influence the value of a work of art.’

The mansion, complete with three bathrooms and two half baths, is the perfect home for a family looking to plants roots in the northern New York city.

However, the 158-yer-old home needs a bit of work after the home was acquired by the City of Auburn last summer through a property tax foreclosure.

The city said the mansion won’t go to the highest bidder, but the buyer who has the most comprehensive restoration plan for the property.

‘It’s not so much the buyer who offers the best price that is of importance here, it’s the buyer with the best intended use and plan to restore this mansion that really matters,’ said DeRosa.

Due to Seymour’s role as the founder of the Seymour Library and the Auburn City Hospital, the home is eligible to enter the National Register of Historic Places.

That has helped attract potential buyers to the home, according to DeRosa.

‘The house is attracting passionate historic home lovers from all over the country. It’s not only the house that’s intriguing to these buyers, it’s the beautiful historic city of Auburn that’s fascinating to them as well,’ he said

People interested in purchasing the mansion must include answers to a questionnaire with their financial offer, going into specifics about the property will be used, the buyer’s plan to restore the structure and what their intentions for the home are after it has been restored.
