Police have launched a probe after a person jumped into the 9/11 North Tower Memorial.

The person survived the leap, diving into the 45ft reflecting pool, which was briefly cordoned off, according to the New York Times.

Officials said the jumper was a relative of a 9/11 victim who was ‘briefly granted access to the restricted area at the plaza-level.’

They had been looking at their loved one’s name on the memorial, with the area reopening a short time later. The person ‘complained of back pain’ to medics.

A New York City Fire Department spokesman confirmed to DailyMail.com the person survived the leap into the 18-inch deep water.
