91-year-old grocery store worker will finally be able to retire after raising more than $60,000

A 91-year-old grocery store worker is finally set to retire thanks to the help of the nearly $65,000 worth of funds raised on GoFundMe after working for seven decades.

Betty Glover from Phoenix, Oregon, has been bagging groceries for the past ten years at a WinCo location in Medford, Oregon.

Earlier this month, Betty – who turns 92 on May 22 – organized a GoFundMe to help get some cash to pay off the fifth wheel camper she lives in, which is her final expense before retiring.

Although she had a goal of $40,000, she was able to raise more than $65,000 and is now looking forward to spending the rest of her days with her great-grandchildren when she retires on May 1.

Betty loves her job and her co-workers, but she has was been wanting to slow down and rest ever since she turned 90.

So, she took to GoFundMe in hopes of raising some funds.

She said: ‘I am a great-grandmother of almost 92, still checking groceries at WinCo. Although I love my customers and the people I work with, I would like to retire.

‘I really need to retire as my eyesight is failing due to macular degeneration. To retire I need to pay off the fifth wheel I live in. If I can do this, I will have enough to pay for the rent of the space, groceries, and medications that I need.

‘Anything you can do to help would be much appreciated.’

Many members of the community and fellow WinCo workers chipped in to help the 91-year-old retire, raising over $60,000.

Speaking to Rogue Valley Times, Betty said she was overwhelmed by the number of donations that poured in.

She was shocked when the total soared well beyond her goal of $40,000.

Betty told the outlet: ‘I never even thought I’d make $40,000. It really is heartwarming, and it makes me want to cry.

‘I didn’t even know how to do a GoFundMe. My granddaughter did it for me, but I thought, “Nobody’s gonna do anything. Nobody cares about others anymore.” I think all my co-workers have contributed and a bunch of my regulars.’

Betty noted that her regulars have made her love her job even more, explaining that she has seen families grow and change over the last decade.

However, when she turned 90, she knew she needed to slow down. She switched from working four days a week to two days.

She explained: ‘It got to be too much. At 90, my legs were starting to give out. By 91, I was feeling it even more. I talked to our guy who does the schedule and he said, “If you can give me two days, I’ll be OK.” So that’s what we agreed on.’

Now, Betty is finally able to retire after ‘working all [her] life.’

Betty – who has two kids, four grandkids, six great-grandkids, and two great-great-grandkids – is more than ready to spend time with her family.

‘I’d love to watch those little ones grow up. They are really sweet, and when you work when your children are small, you miss a lot of their life. Now, I’d like to enjoy my great-great-grandchildren,’ she told KDRV.

Thanks to the support from her frequent customers who want her to ‘take a vacation’ to see her family, Betty has announced her retirement and is overjoyed to begin another chapter in life.

She told Rogue Valley Times, she is excited about living.

‘I look forward to tomorrow. I always have. I don’t sit around and think about dying. I think about living. And I think about what exciting things are gonna happen tomorrow,’ she said.
