The man’s white Suzuki Vitara 4WD with green P Plates on it lay wrapped around a concrete bollard just a few metres away.

Police alleged the man ‘deliberately’ ran over crowd of people, seriously injuring 14 people including several in a critical condition, before crashing into a tram stop.

Their motives are as yet unknown and police have not commented on whether the attack was terror related.

‘At this stage, we believe it was a deliberate act. The motivations are unknown. It’s still early days in the investigation,’ Victoria Police Commander Russell Barrett said.

Both men, aged between 25 and 35, were eventually taken to Melbourne Police station to face further interrogations by detectives.

Victims of the rampage included a preschool aged child with serious head injuries and several others in critical condition who were rushed to hospital.

More could have been injured if not for the vehicle crashing into a bollard at the tram stop out the front of Flinders Street Station.
