Canberra car covered in 20,000 fairy lights for Christmas

A young motorist has decided to spread Christmas cheer in an interesting way – by covering his car in thousands of fairy lights.

Canberra man Jordan Wallace spent 40 hours attaching 20,000 fairy lights to his Hyundai Santa Fe, with assistance from an enthusiastic group of little helpers.

The 21-year-old said this is the second year in a row he has created a Christmas car, following the 10,000 lights he put on his Holden Astra in 2016.

Jordan told Daily Mail Australia he was inspired by a similar car he saw during Christmas as a child.

‘When I was younger there was a ute that used to drive around my suburb with a light-up reindeer in the tray,’ he said.

‘I really wanted to take that spirit to the next level hence the Christmas Car was born.’

Surprisingly, the best reactions to the car come not from kids, but from others in their earlier 20s, although children love it too.

‘It’s the people closest to our age that we get the loudest cheers from. Some even go as far as asking to ride in the car,’ he said.

The car took Jordan and 10 of his friends about 40 hours to finish, and they worked on the vehicle three days.

As for the cost of all those lights, Jordan managed to create his Christmas car for about $400.

‘The only supplies we really needed were lights and tape, other bits and pieces we needed to power the lights I thankfully already had on hand.

‘We also bought some candy canes to hand out on our travels.’

The 20,000 lights are powered by a second battery, located in the boot of the Santa Fe.

‘The battery is connected to an inverter that transforms the 12-volt power from the car into 240-volt power just like at home,’ Jordan said.

The Christmas car has attracted a lot of attention on social media, with people posting photos on Facebook and Instagram with the hashtag #ChristmasCar.

When it comes to the main aim of bringing Christmas cheer to his local area, the project is mission accomplished for Jordan.

At first, a lot of people don’t believe their eyes – they look at the car in disbelief,’ he said.

‘Once the shock fades through we’ve had nothing but joyous reactions – always thumbs up from passing motorists and cheers from crowds on the street.

‘Some of my favourite comments have been from passers-by that expressed how proud they were to live in Canberra and have a community that creates projects like this.’
