Born on Christmas Day: From Isaac Newton to Chris Kamara

It could well be the most convenient day on which to be born – it comes with a guaranteed birthday atmosphere, gifts by default, good telly, loads of booze and plenty of jollity.

But, of course, it could also be used by stingy loved ones as an excuse to halve your annual allowance of presents.

It’s also a tad lonely – December 25 is the rarest birthday (other than February 29), despite being perhaps the world’s most famous day.

For all that, however, it’s still a day that has given us some extremely important people from across the full spectrum of human endeavour.

Isaac Newton, one of the most important scientists to have ever lived, was born on Christmas Day – and so too Humphrey Bogart, one of cinema’s most iconic stars.

Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau, was also ushered into the world on December 25 – on the very same day as English singer Dido.

On the special day in 1957, meanwhile, Shane MacGowan – co-writer of Fairytale of New York, quite possibly the most-loved Christmas song of all time – sucked in his first breath.

In the sport world, the day gave us former England cricket captain Alastair Cook and much-loved ex-footballer and commentator Chris Kamara.

Below are some more remarkable individuals born on the remarkable day.
