Ferry crashes into sand bar near NYC’s Verrazano Bridge

  • New York City ferry crashed onto a sandbar near the Varrazano Bridge in Queens
  • The boat came aground in a channel between the bridge and Rockaway at 6pm
  • 27 people were left stranded but nobody was hurt and the boat wasn’t damaged

A New York City ferry crashed onto a sandbar near Queens on Wednesday evening, leaving more than two dozen passengers stranded and waiting for assistance.

The boat was carrying 27 people and ran aground in a channel between the Varrazano Bridge and Rockaway Peninsula at about 6.05pm.

It hit the sandbar hours before the waterway is supposed to hit low tide, which won’t happen until after 8pm.

No one was injured in the jolting crash, and the boat doesn’t seem to be taking in water. The boat also didn’t appear to sustain any damage.

New York’s police and fire departments are responding to the scene of the ferry, and footage from a NBC New York helicopter shows passengers sitting and standing on the boat and waiting to be rescued.

But emergency vessels appeared to be staying a safe distance away from the ferry, as officials opted against evacuating the vessel and instead are waiting on a tugboat to pull it back into the water.

This is the second time a New York City ferry has grounded in recent weeks.

On November 27 a boat was damaged when it smashed into a sunken pier near Pier 11 in lower Manhattan while on the way to the Rockaways.
