Friends have paid tribute to a young man who plunged 50ft to his death at a construction site. 

Sam Clarke’s body was found in a deep trench by workers at the site of a skyscraper in Bank Street in Canary Wharf, London on Tuesday morning. 

His friends had taken to social media to appeal for information after Sam went missing following a gig at the O2 arena in Greenwich on New Year’s Eve.

Sam’s friend Jack Armstrong said he had been with a group at the Indigo at the O2 music venue in Greenwich before becoming separated from friends.

In a heartbreaking post last night, Jack confirmed Sam’s body had been found.

He wrote: ‘I would like to thank everyone for the messages of support and shares. 

‘Unfortunately it’s bad news, as Sam passed away (he was the body found at Canary Wharf this morning). 

‘We all his friends and all family are absolutely distraught, R.I.P Sam, God bless.’

Sam’s best friend Dean Calloway added: ‘Rest in peace to my best mate Sam you will be missed by everyone.’

Sam, who is believed to be from St Albans in Hertfordshire, had enjoyed the Kisstory hits gig at the O2, which featured DJs including DJ Luck & MC Neat and Justin Wilkes.

A Met Police spokesman confirmed: ‘We were called at 8.46am to reports of a body found. 

‘The body of a man was found after falling into a deep trench. He was pronounced dead at scene. 

‘His death is being treated as unexplained and he is not believed to be a member of the construction team.’

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called at 8.52am to Bank Street, Tower Hamlets to reports of a person fallen from height.

‘We sent our Hazardous Area Response Team, an incident response officer and an ambulance crew to the scene. Sadly, the patient was dead at the scene.’
