Beach houses swept away by Storm Eleanor

This is the shocking moment Storm Eleanor swept away a row of beach huts as winds of up to 100mph battered the UK.

The huts in Hayling Island, near Portsmouth, Hants, were ripped from their foundations and smashed by strong waves which left them floating in a flooded car park.

Company director, Dominic Digby, 48, who drove into the car park to go kitesurfing nearby, shot the video when he and a friend found it been entirely flooded.

He said: ‘When we arrived it was completely flooded and the waves were smashing the beach huts.

‘The waves eventually ripped about seven huts from the ground, and the car park was under about a 18 inches of water.

‘A woman had parked her car to go for a walk and when she came back the front grill of her car was covered in seaweed.

‘It was quite bad, even the golf course was beginning to flood. The wind was blowing at about 40 knots, perfect for some kitesurfing.

‘When we eventually got out there the waves were over 20ft high. It was extremely severe and choppy, but we had a great time anyway.’

Storm Eleanor has wreaked havoc across the country and left devastation in its wake after battering the UK with winds of up to 100mph.

One person died and several others were injured as thousands of homes were left without power.

The clean-up operation is under way after trees were uprooted and a seawall collapsed in Cornwall.
