Two Northumbria Police officers face child cruelty charges

Claire Wallace and Mark Horwell face two charges each of assaulting or ill-treating or neglecting a young person/child last year

Two police officers have appeared in court accused of pouring water over a child’s head.

Claire Wallace and Mark Horwell face two charges each of assaulting or ill-treating or neglecting a young person/child on August 6 last year.

The pair were both in the dock at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Wallace, 40, who works as a police officer with Northumbria Police, faces two charges which includes ‘pouring water over [the youngster’s] head on more than one occasion in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to health’.

Horwell, 48, who is a sergeant with West Yorkshire Police, also faces two charges, including allegedly pouring water over the child and a separate offence of ‘application by force of pushing [the youngster] into a taxi’.

Both spoke only to confirm their names, dates of birth, addresses and to enter not guilty pleas to all the allegations.

James Long, prosecuting, said: ‘The prosecution say this is not suitable for trial at this court. It should be allocated to the crown court.’

Tracey Wood, for Horwell, and Matthew Savage, representing Wallace, agreed that magistrates’ powers were insufficient to deal with the case.

Magistrates declined jurisdiction and Wallace, who also goes by the name of Baston, from Newcastle, and Horwell, from Sheffield, were both released on unconditional bail.

The pair will next appear before Newcastle Crown Court on January 5.
