‘I’m sure I’ve mentioned my “one in, one out” rule before: In our house, when something new comes in, something has to go out,’ Shelley wrote.

She added that early in the new year is the perfect time to enforce the ‘one in, one out’ rule, due to the number of material gifts that are received at Christmas.

As a result, the playroom is the first area on Shelley’s to-do list, as kids’ toys begin to pile-up.

The mother-of-two wrote that her family clears old items into clothes and toy bins, and then selects a charity to donate them to.

‘Since holidaying in Fiji, my girls have a first-hand account of children living with less and after spending a day in a school and village with limited learning and play equipment, they now understand the importance of supporting communities less fortunate and it makes the “one in, one out” a lot more genuine,’ she wrote.

But Shelley said one of the best ways to ensure your home is de-cluttered after Christmas is to cut things off at the source.

The TV personality said she gifted her two daughters experiences instead of material gifts, which combated ‘stuff piling up’.

Shelley bought her children tickets to multiple theatre shows that the family can enjoy throughout the year.

‘Seeing live shows is something that we enjoy doing and the memories last a lot longer than a piece of plastic – it gives us something to mark in the diary and look forward to and a topic of conversation for the rest of our lives,’ she wrote.
