Why Nicole Kidman will never mention oldest kids at awards

Why does Nicole Kidman have a history of not mentioning the two adopted children with ex-husband Tom Cruise at awards ceremonies?

After the 50-year-old only mentioned her youngest children with country singer Keith Urban – Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret – during her Golden Globes acceptance speech on Sunday, fans on Twitter were left baffled.

But it seems there were no malicious intentions behind Nicole’s decision not to thank Isabella, 25 and Connor, 22, who are both devout Scientologists.

In fact, her previous speeches prove the Moulin Rouge! star only ever addresses the children she shares with Keith, not the two she adopted with Tom.

Fans who were quick to criticise Nicole for her alleged ‘snub’ need only look back to hard-hitting 2015 documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.

In it, director Alex Gibney argued that the faith drove a wedge between the Australian actress and her older children – and history supports those arguments.

The Church of Scientology has since denied the claims, however, while Nicole has previously refuted speculation the religion prompted a divide between her family.

‘I’ve chosen not to speak publicly about Scientology,’ she told Vogue in 2015.

‘I have two children who are Scientologists – Connor and Isabella – and I utterly respect their beliefs.’

But former Scientologist Leah Remini claimed in her book ‘Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology’ that Nicole has been made an ‘SP’ by the church.

An ‘SP’ is a ‘Suppresive Person’, a term reportedly given to former members of the church of Scientology, generally indicating they’ve been ‘cut off’ from their family.

‘Her career is still going, and she has a husband and family… Just remember Nicole Kidman. She left and she’s okay,’ Leah wrote of her struggles to leave the faith.

The Golden Globe winner certainly is doing great, but has not mentioned her adopted children by name publicly since.

Nicole’s experiences with Scientology began shortly before December 22, 1992, when Isabella Jane Cruise was born to Scientologist parents who couldn’t look after her.

They were put in touch, via the church, with Tom and his wife at the time, Nicole, who had recently suffered a ‘very traumatic’ ectopic pregnancy.

But when Nicole and Tom split in 2001, Isabelle and Connor stayed with their father, who continued to raise them as devout members of the church.

Nicole wasn’t present at Bella’s wedding in 2015 and when her father Anthony died last year, her oldest daughter wasn’t physically there to offer her support.

During her emotional speech, Nicole paid glowing tribute to her husband Keith, their two children, her mother Janelle, and her sister Antonia.

Likewise, former Scientologist Leah Remini wrote in her 2015 book about 'escaping' the church that she idolised Nicole, who she said had been labelled a 'Suppresive Person' by the church

As was the case at the Emmy Awards in September, Isabella and Connor were not mentioned at all in Nicole’s speech.

The veteran actress accepted the ceremony’s first honour and acknowledged how early in the evening her accolade was presented.

‘First cab off the rank, yikes! Thanks. That means my daughters are still awake so Sunny, Faith, I love you, I’m bringing this home to you babies,’ she said.

Despite touching the crowd with her heartfelt speech, some fans criticised the actress for failing to mention her two adopted children.
