Children ‘played manhunt’ in garden where body was found

Residents of a street where police found the body of a man allegedly killed by his daughter have told of their shock at the gruesome discovery.

A woman, named locally as 63-year-old Barbara Coombes, walked into a police station on Sunday and said she killed her father ‘a number of years ago’.

Detectives later dug up the garden of her £127,000 semi in Stockport, Cheshire and found human remains, feared to be those of Kenneth Coombes. It is thought he may have died more than a decade ago.

Shannon Hodgkinson, whose mother lives on the street, wrote on Facebook: ‘The amount of times the kids off Matlock [Road], including me, have hid in that garden playing manhunt in the last 12 years is scary.

‘Literally you never know who lives next door.’

Residents told the Daily Mail they remembered Mrs Coombes telling locals that her father had died some years ago.

Mrs Coombes, who is separated from her husband, has a student daughter, Islay, 29, who also used to live at the property. She was too upset to comment when contacted yesterday.

Neighbour Rita Spilman, 73, said of Mrs Coombes: ‘She is a quiet sort of person really.

‘I used to say hello to her, but that was about it. She didn’t mix with people very much.

‘I’m sure she told people her dad had died. I don’t remember exactly when, but it was some time ago.’

Police are asking neighbours if they knew Mr Coombes, who would have been in this 80s in 2005.

Detectives  confirmed a 63-year-old woman had been arrested on suspicion of murder and she was helping them with their inquiries.

Mrs Coombes’s mother, Mary, died aged just 49 in March 1973.

Mrs Coombes walked into Cheadle Heath police station, more than eight miles from her house, on Sunday to confess.

Inquiries are ongoing and the man’s family, who are being supported by specially trained officers, have been informed.

Police have started searching a garden at a £130,000 property in Matlock Road. It is understood 18 bins have been delivered to the property at the request of officers and evidence tents have been set up at the back of the house.

Ann Millar, 73, said: ‘She is a lovely woman who has lived in that house for years with her dad and daughter. I never saw her live with a husband.

‘She never gave any impression that she had a dark past and I can’t believe she would be capable of something like this.

‘I used to see her in the morning walking her dog and always stopped to say hello.’

Teresa Cunningham added: ‘She was very reserved with me. She is dressed very poorly and has grey straggly hair.

‘I only ever saw her when she was walking her small dog or returning home with the shopping.’
