Doctors gave his cause of death as organ failure due to septic shock caused by influenza.

Mother Beverly told WPXI that before his death Kyler was extremely fit and was going to school to become a personal trainer.

She first noticed he was ill when he came home for Christmas looking run down and with flu-like symptoms.

He managed to attend a family get-together and celebrated again on December 24, before attempting to return to work December 26.

Fiancee Olivia Marcanio recalled that day, saying Kyler had come home and laid down complaining that his chest hurt.

From there his condition deteriorated rapidly and the following day he was taken to the emergency room before being airlifted to hospital.

He died less than 24 hours after arriving, on December 28.

Writing on Facebook, father Todd said: ‘We are without words for the passing of our only son Kyler Baughman. Please keep his memory alive.’

Beverly added: ‘I just think he ignored it and thought it’d go away like most people, and I think people need to pay more attention to their bodies.’

HOW CAN THE FLU BE DEADLY?

Flu often just leaves sufferers feeling sick and riddled with a constant cough and runny nose. However, in extreme cases it can be deadly.

It poses the biggest risks to the elderly, young children, pregnant women and those with a compromised immune system.

Asthma, diabetes and heart disease patients also face an increased risk of death from the usually harmless virus.

But the flu, which is causing havoc around the world this winter, can be life-threatening, or cause potentially fatal complications, for adults of any age.

It can lead to pneumonia – but could also trigger sepsis – when an infection such as blood poisoning sparks a violent immune response in which the body attacks its own organs.
