Man crashes ultralight plane into house near Hervey Bay

A grandfather miraculously walked away without any serious injuries after crashing land his ultralight plane into a suburban home.

Hugh Dickensen, 68, encountered problems shortly after taking off from Pacific Haven Airport, near Hervey Bay north of Brisbane, on Wednesday morning.

Cross winds struck, forcing him to turn left which caused him to hit the tops of trees and crash land into a nearby house at 11am.

Senior constable Glenn Rusten said it was a miracle Mr Dickensen wasn’t seriously injured.

‘For a light aircraft like this one, hitting the trees and hitting a building and a heavy impact with the ground, you always expect far more significant injuries,’ he told reporters.

Home owner Terry Adams received a phone call at work telling him about the accident.

‘Just got a phone call and said, ‘You might want to come home, there’s a plane in your house”,’ he told Nine News.

‘For the old mate, I’m glad he’s not dead but the house it doesn’t really matter – that’s what insurance is for.’

A witness described seeing the plane take off and hearing high revs and ‘two bangs’.

Mr Dickensen, who lives at Childers 40 kilometres from the crash site, hit the back of the house during the crash landing before skidding into the front yard.

Queensland Fire and Emergency officer Ross Findlay said the ultralight scraped some boards off the house.

Mr Dickensen, who took off shortly after a breakfast gathering with other pilots, escaped from the wreckage without sustaining any life threatening injuries, Nine New reported.

A crash investigation is underway with Mr Adams now preparing an insurance claim.
