Tour Down Under men stay five-star hotel women in dorms

The female riders of the Tour Down Under will be put up in dormitory-style accommodation – while their male equivalents enjoy five-star sleeping quarters.

Women competing in the annual race in Adelaide will be put up in Lincoln College, a facility costing a maximum of $60-per-night that has communal showers and toilets.

The men meanwhile will be staying at The Hilton in the heart of the city’s CBD, where the cheapest room costs $204 for one evening.

Officials say the female cyclists welcomed the choice of residence, and said it was a far cry from what they have had to experience in the past.

Race director Kimberley Conte told Adelaide Now the women were happy to receive the ‘luxury of their own room’ as opposed to ‘when once they have had to sleep on the floor of a nuclear power plant.’

‘Multiple teams have requested to go back to the college this year.’

The race begins on Sunday January 14 and ends eight days later on the 22nd.

The men have been put up in the five-star Hilton hotel since 1999, while the women have only recently been housed at Lincoln College.

Events South Australia Executive Director Hitaf Rasheed said some women had ‘specifically asked’ to return to the budget accommodation, because of its ‘high-speed wifi, a free laundry, storage spaces and areas for mechanics and easy access to training routes.’

‘The service they receive from the Lincoln College Staff is exceptional,’ she told Adelaide Now.

‘We are thrilled with the feedback we have had from the teams, particularly the international teams who travel to races in Europe year round giving great feedback on the organisation of the race.’
