  • Donald Trump blamed cancellation on relocation of the embassy from Mayfair
  • He branded the building of new embassy in Vauxhall, London, a ‘bad deal’
  • The Republican announced he was refusing to ‘cut the ribbon’ on Twitter

Donald Trump has been ridiculed after suggesting the US embassy was moving to an ‘off location’ as residents vent their fury at the president on social media.

The president sparked fury after Tweeting about the relocation from Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, central London, across the River Thames to Vauxhall, even saying he cancelled his February UK visit over the decision.

Trump said: ‘Reason I cancelled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for ‘peanuts’, only to build a new one in an off location for $1.2billion. Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon – NO!’

The new US embassy in Vauxhall, south-west London, was branded a 'bad deal' by Trump, who has been criticised for his remarks about relocating from Mayfair

His remarks were met with a combination of outrage, indignation and joy as one user proudly declared Battersea a Trump-free zone while another joked that the area’s famous dog rescue home was celebrating the news.

One user warned the president is ‘TOAST’ after ‘slighting’ south-west London, with an account dedicated to 10 Downing Street’s cat adding: ‘This just got personal.’

Another ridiculed the Republican by suggesting he didn’t want to visit because of the amount of dogs in the area, a nod to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

Trump’s dismissal of Vauxhall was also questioned by David Hatcher, of Estates Gazette, who described it as ‘a prime central London location’.

‘At present to some it might look like a load of cranes and construction sites with not going on around them,’ he said.

‘However, Vauxhall’s star has undoubtedly risen and Apple’s decision to locate its giant new headquarters at the iconic Battersea Power Station is perhaps the ultimate rubber stamp of approval that shows it is establishing itself as a prime central London location.

‘Given its long-established history as an area rich with nightlife with ever more techhie types with plenty of disposable income set to move, as well as those that have bought pricey flats, it will likely only become more appealing as time goes.’
