Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he will bring an end to his war of words with Antonio Conte, but vowed to treat his Chelsea counterpart with ‘contempt’ from now on.

The two Premier League managers have been trading insults in press conferences ever since Conte took charge of Chelsea in 2016 with the latest exchange falling to bitter accusations of match-fixing among others.

But following Conte’s latest insult, in which he described Mourinho as a ‘little man’, the Portuguese has vowed to stay silent on the matter.

Mourinho said: ‘I think when a person insults another you can expect a response or you can expect contempt. 

‘The first time he insulted me I had a response, a response that I know touched the point where he really feels hurt. 

‘Then he insulted me for a second time but now I change and now contempt, and for me contempt means end of the story.’
