Nigel Farage last night said there was ‘no chance’ he will return as Ukip leader.

Former Ukip deputy leader David Campbell Bannerman, who is now a Tory MEP, yesterday sparked speculation that Mr Farage could return.

After Ukip chairman Paul Oakden suggested current leader Henry Bolton would come to a decision imminently on whether to resign, Mr Campbell Bannerman tweeted: ‘‏I think Ukip chairman’s comments, together with Nigel Farage identifying a new role for pro-Brexit campaign organisation suggests he’ll be back as Ukip Leader shortly.’

However, a spokesman for Mr Farage told the Mail there was ‘no chance’.

Last week Mr Farage caused controversy when he suggested he could back a second referendum, but he backtracked on his comments just hours later.

Yesterday he warned the Leave side need to regain the political initiative or Brexit could be scuppered.

He told The Observer: ‘The Remain side are making all the running. They have a majority in Parliament and unless we get ourselves organised we could lose the historic victory that was Brexit.’

Mr Farage served as Ukip leader from 2006 to 2009. He returned to the post in 2010, but quit in the wake of his defeat in South Thanet in the 2015 general election.

Three days later he ‘unresigned’ and remained in charge until September 2016 following the Brexit vote. After his successor Diane James stepped down after just 18 days, he returned for two months as acting leader.
