Turning car collides with driver down a bus lane in Sydney

A crash involving a car driving down a bus lane and another turning left across it has divided opinion about who is to blame.

Dashcam footage shows the driver changing into a bus lane, outside its active hours, in Ryde on Sydney’s north shore and overtaking several cars.

The car then comes to a side street where a white BMW turned left from the lane on his right, cutting across his path causing the driver to crash into him.

The BMW appeared to indicate and slow right down before making the turn, but did not get into the left land beforehand.

Other drivers couldn’t agree on who was to blame for the accident in furious discussion of the footage on social media.

Some thought the driver who took the video was to blame because they came up too fast and didn’t pay attention to the turning BMW.

‘Bus lane does not mean undertaking lane faster than the flow of traffic. You were driving with no regards of others but yourself,’ one wrote.

‘Driving faster than the flow of traffic, not watching the other cars, ignored the indicator of the turning car. Totally avoidable accident,’ another wrote.

‘Looks to me like the white car was avoiding the bus lane, indicating to turn left, and that you decided that you had right of way, and forced your way through. Your road rage cause the collision,’ a third argued.

Others sided with the poster as they were legally driving in an inactive bus lane and the BMW turned left from the incorrect lane.

‘Turning left from the middle lane is stupid, dangerous and illegal. Feel sorry for the dashcam driver who is now having to get their car repaired, one wrote.

‘I hate drivers turning from the middle lane like this. So illegal,’ another wrote.

Legally, the BMW was wrong to turn left from the middle lane and should have turned into the bus lane about 100m before the corner.

However, as many drivers pointed out, the dashcam driver should have been more aware of the other car’s error and slowed down enough to avoid the collision.
