Swimmers brace behind hut to escape mammoth swell

Tuesday morning’s rough sea conditions weren’t enough to deter eager beachgoers from hitting up popular swim-spots along Sydney’s coastline.

Despite giant, powerful swells of up to five metres and hazardous surf conditions, brave swimmers donned their bathing suits and took to the battered coast.

While some remained beneath the surface within the safe perimeter of Bronte Beach’s ocean pool, others stood and took cover from the mammoth surf.

A pair of swimmers were spotted taking shelter from giant waves almost double their height as they took on conditions at Bronte Beach, in Sydney’s east.

Bracing themselves against the swimming club store room at the beach’s iconic baths, the duo appear amused as water thrashed about and enveloped the area.

Surf Lifesaving New South Wales’ Liam Howitt told Daily Mail Australia swimmers heading to the ocean should assess their ability and measure it against today’s conditions.

With almost all patrolled beaches in closed due to dangerous surf, Mr Howitt urged beachgoers to not ‘under estimate the conditions.’

‘We really encourage people to assess the conditions and if you have any doubt, it’s always best not to head out,’ Mr Howitt said.

The only reported open beaches are Blacksmiths, Manly, Bondi and Maroubra.

Mr Howitt also noted the extreme caution required for those looking to go rock fishing, with several fatalities already recorded this season.

‘Our safety advice for recreational rock fishing is for people to always wear a life jacket.’

‘We encourage everyone to look out for their own and each other’s safety.’

Beachgoers have been warned to take extra care when choosing to take on mother nature’s swell, as wild seas have been predicted for the rest of the week.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned on Tuesday ‘large and powerful surf conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing.’

Strong wind warnings have been issued for several sections of the New South Wales coast including Sydney closed waters, the Byron Coast, Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast.
