Labrador retriever survives five days in snow in Maine

A 13-year-old Labrador retriever survived being buried alive in the snow for five days.

The family of Sophie said the dog went missing on January 4, when they took her outside while they plowed and shoveled their property.

She wandered off just before 5pm, and didn’t come back.

The family shared a picture of her on Facebook the next day and asked the public’s help in tracking her down.

‘Please share, let us know if she’s been spotted or any other scenario. We have calls in to animal control, responsible pet care, the town office and neighbors,’ owner Alber Silver wrote on Facebook, in a post that was shared more than 2,000 times.

Silver told WCSH that the family feared Sophie may have wandered off to die.

But around 10am on January 9, someone spotted Sophie poking her head through the snow of a nearby property that had already been searched.

A tractor created a path to her, and Sophie was dug out.

Silver said that it was a ‘miracle’ that Sophie was found in good shape after so many nights in the bitter cold.

The vet said that other than losing five pounds, the dog was in good shape. There was no frostbite or serious injuries.

‘This is truly a miracle and our prayers were definitely answered. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to all of the Facebook people who shared and commented and cared, to all of the people who prayed for her, to all of the people who took time out of their days to be thinking of us,’ Silver wrote on Wednesday.
