Woman snatches newborn baby in India as he slept by mother

This is the disturbing moment a newborn baby boy is snatched from hospital as he slept next to his mother.

A video shows how an unidentified woman sneaked into a maternity ward and carried the child away, just six hours after he was born.

The shocking child snatching has raised questions about security at the hospital in the city of Thane, in the state of Maharashtra, western India.

Mohini Mohan Bhavar, 19, had gone to Thane Civil Hospital where her healthy baby was safely delivered.

CCTV shows how she was lying in bed beside the baby when she was approached by a woman in the early hours of the morning.

Mohini said: ‘At 1am a woman approached me claiming my mother-in-law sitting outside was asking for the child, and took him.

‘When I woke up around 4 am I saw my child was missing. My family members sitting outside were unaware of the woman.

‘When we inquired with the hospital authorities, they said they were unaware of any such thing.’

Mohini and her horrified family reported the case to the police who have launched a kidnapping investigation.

They are examining CCTV from inside and outside the hospital in a bid to identify the woman.

A police spokesman said: ‘The footage shows that the woman took the child from the first bed of the ward and immediately left the hospital.

‘The victim’s bed was close to the exit door and we suspect it is a planned crime.

‘We are investigating the matter to nab the accused.’

Mohini and her husband live in the village of Bhadvad, in the state of Maharashtra, western India.

On Sunday people from the village protested outside the hospital, complaining about the lack of security.

They are demanding action against the staff who were working at the time of the abduction.

There were two nurses and a doctor on the ward but they were attending a patient who had gone into labour when the child was snatched.
