Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet considering Anfield future

  • Simon Mignolet lost his place to Loris Karius for the win over Manchester City
  • Mignolet and Karius had been rotated during Liverpool’s Christmas fixtures
  • Mignolet said he felt that it ‘was not a healthy situation’ for a goalkeeper

Simon Mignolet is considering his Liverpool future after being dropped again by manager Jurgen Klopp in favour of Loris Karius.

Klopp confirmed that the Belgium international lost his place as Liverpool’s No 1 ahead of their 4-3 victory over Premier League leaders Manchester City on Sunday.

After being rotated with Karius during the Christmas period, Mignolet went to Klopp after captaining Liverpool to a 2-1 win at Burnley for an explanation as to why he was being changed so frequently.

‘In the Christmas period we had rotated again and I felt that that was not a healthy situation for a keeper,’ Mignolet told Sporza.

‘After all that has happened this season, I know where I am at and the situation has become clearer. Klopp told me honestly and personally in that conversation.

‘Of course I am absolutely not satisfied with that, but I must always respect a decision of the coach. I always try to stay quiet and calm. In the past I did come back stronger from such situations.

‘But I must of course also think of my own future. The only thing I can do is focus on my training and do my best. I become 30 years old and the World Cup is coming this summer.

‘This situation cannot take too long, which is clear. I cannot lose any more time.’

Mignolet has been dropped for Karius in Liverpool’s Champions League matches this season and has sometimes been rotated for Premier League games, such as the 4-0 win over Arsenal in August.

On that occasion, Klopp insisted Mignolet was still Liverpool’s No 1 but admitted before the City encounter that he had now been usurped.

‘With goalkeepers you have to do it like this. Usually I could say it’s a decision for today but if Loris now is able to perform, he will stay in the goal,’ Klopp said.

Karius was beaten at his near post for City’s first goal at Anfield – scored by Leroy Sane – but had no chance with either of their other two efforts.

Last season Mignolet was dropped in favour of Karius but regained his place after a string of errors by the German.
