Trump hits record low approval but even Dems like economy

Most Americans are feeling bullish about the U.S. economy, and President Donald Trump gets much of the credit, according to a new national survey.

But his overall approval ratings in the latest CBS News poll are still hovering at historically low levels.

Just 37 per cent of American adults contacted by the network’s pollsters said they approve of the job the president is doing. That number is lower than what every other president since Ronald Reagan has registered after one year in office.

Fifty-eight percent said they disapprove of Trump’s job in the Oval Office.

A new CBS News poll has Donald Trump’s approval rating at a historic low for a president’s one-year mark, but the U.S. economy is still getting strong reviews from Americans

But 67 per cent had good things to say about the state of the economy just weeks after Trump signed new tax cuts into law, and businesses responded with a flood of Christmas bonuses and wage hikes for millions of workers.

Even among Democrats, 55 per cent said the economy is either ‘very good’ or ‘fairly good.’

Of the group with a rosy economic outlook, 71 per cent said the Trump administration’s policies were ‘mostly’ or ‘partially’ responsible.

The president’s 37 per cent approval rating from CBS is in line with some competing surveys but out of step with others.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll on Thursday showed that 45 per cent are supportive of Trump’s job performance.

That poll limits itself to likely U.S. voters and was a better predictor of the 2016 election result than most others.

CBS’s poll has never seen Trump’s numbers tick above 43 per cent since he took office.

The economy’s performance is a bright spot for Trump among a host of policy gray areas like immigration and health care – issues that attract more criticism than praise for the White House.

The U.S. gross domestic product grew at a 3.2 per cent rate in the last quarter of 2017, a three-year high.

And jobles claims filed last week nationwide were at the lowest level since 1973.

The nation’s unemployment rate, 4.1 per cent, is the lowest since 2000.

But many Democrats argue that recent trends reflect the continuation of economic conditions left over from the Barack Obama presidency.

Americans gave Trump a 46 per cent approval rating on the economy’s performance in the CBS poll. Another 45 per cent praised his handling of terrorism, and 38 per cent agreed with his approach to tax policy.

Trump’s handling of immigration won support from just 34 per cent.
