Former Daily Mail legal chief dies aged 89

Former Daily Mail legal director Arthur Davidson has died at the age of 89.

The lawyer and politician worked for Associated Newspapers between 1987 and 1990.

Born in Liverpool in 1928, Mr Davidson was educated at King George V School, Southport, and went on to study at Trinity College, Cambridge.

He completed his national service in the Merchant Navy, before being called to the Bar in 1953. Mr Davidson was elected MP for Accrington, Lancashire, in 1966, holding the Labour seat for four successive elections.

The QC served as a junior minister in the Harold Wilson and James Callaghan governments and was shadow attorney general under Michael Foot. He died on Tuesday following a fall.
