Fans urge Prince William to grow a beard

He caused a stir by debuting a newly-shorn head during an engagement this week.

And now royal-watchers are urging the Duke of Cambridge to complete his new look by growing a bushy beard.

People have taken to Twitter to call for William, 35, to follow in his brother’s footsteps and sport some facial fuzz to distract attention from his hairless head.

The third-in-line to the throne, whose hairline has been receding for several years, decided to brave the shave ahead of his visit to the Evelina London Children’s Hospital on Thursday.

And while royal-watchers agree he looks ‘a million times better’, many have now turned their attention to his lack of facial hair.

One Twitter user observed, ‘I’ve never seen a man in more need of a beard,’ while Suzanne Beily-Reiter agreed he would look ‘smashing’ with some stubble.

Some urged the prince to complete his transformation by shaving his scalp entirely, while others suggested a goatee would be a welcome addition to his new look.

It would not be the first time the Duke has dabbled in facial hair; in 2008 he sent hearts a-flutter by growing a beard for the festive season, claiming that strangers failed to recognise him.

And despite claiming on Christmas Day that he would shave it off, he kept the fuzz for several weeks.

Prince Harry has been known to tease his older brother about losing his locks; while chatting to a Second World War veteran in Barbados several years ago, Harry remarked that William ‘was already bald aged 12’.

In 2014, the Duchess of Cambridge suggested the perfect solution for her husband’s growing bald patch – an alpaca toupee.

Bookmakers William Hill are now offering odds of 6/4 that William will go for a totally shaved head for Harry’s wedding.

Although the odds are 1/2 that he will stick with his new buzz cut, punters can also place bets on whether the future king will have a hair transplant, with odds of 16/1.

Rupert Adams, William Hill spokesman, said: ‘In the past we have bet on what haircut David Beckham would have for England’s first game of the World Cup in 2006 and had to pay out a small fortune on highlights.

‘We don’t expect any shocks this time round, though.’

Commenting on William’s sleek new look this week, Dylan Brittain, Scotland’s current hairdresser of the year told MailOnline: ‘I love that Prince William has braved the shave.

Despite calls for him to grow a beard, William's new look has gone down a storm with fans. One commented: 'He's been handsome to me no matter what, but I like this look on him'

By having a buzz cut reduces the maintenance and while it is relatively short it is not completely shaved down to the skin, which may be down to personal preference.

‘Shaving his head gives a dramatic change to his appearance as it has changed his face shape making his face appear fuller and I actually think it shows off his appearance more giving him more confidence,’ explained the stylist from Rainbow Room International in Glasgow.

Dylan continued: ‘It is great to see him embracing his receding hairline and not opting for the easy way out like hair transplant as losing your hair is one of the worst things that can happen to a guy. This look makes him seem more down to earth and an “everyday’ guy”.’

It really does run in the family!
