August 2, 1994: Body of Amy Shepherd, 86, was found in her home at Folly Hall Gardens, Wibsey, Bradford. She was strangled, sexually assaulted, then stabbed with a six-inch kitchen knife and left to die
August 15, 1994: Mary Kilbride, 80, was found dead in her home in the Rooley Lane area of Bradford. She was strangled with a towel before being stabbed with the handle of a vanity mirror
1995: Leeds Crown Court found Richard Whelan, 23, guilty of murdering Mrs Kilbride and jailed him for life
2000: The jury found Whelan not guilty. The defence argued there was no evidence of sexual assault in Mrs Kilbride’s murder, and that the killers struck at different times of day
