The star-studded ‘trailer’ for Dundee: The Son Of A Legend Comes Home is set to air to an audience of 100 million Americans during the Super Bowl on Monday morning.
But amid rumours it is merely a 30-second promotion for Tourism Australia as opposed to an actual feature film, an online petition has been launched to encourage filmmakers to produce a real Crocodile Dundee remake.
The NT News launched the campaign on Sunday night, and it appears to have the backing of Australian politicians and film executives.
Bound for the big screen? The NT News has launched a petition to turn a purported commercial for Tourism Australia into a feature film, starring the likes of Chris Hemsworth (pictured)
While the petition currently only has 93 signatures, it’s believed that number will skyrocket once the trailer goes to air during Super Bowl LII, tipped to be the most-watched American TV event of 2018.
The trailer, which revolves around Crocodile Dundee’s American-raised son visiting the Australian outback, appears to have a plot to sustainable enough for a a full-length film.
Speaking with News.com.au on Monday, Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason expressed enthusiasm for a feature project, stating: ‘When you’re dealing with a creative team that has a track record (like Dundee), or a story that people already have an affinity with, that’s always attractive.’
‘When you’re dealing with a creative team that has a track record… that’s exciting’: The first Crocodile Dundee film, released in 1986, became a worldwide sensation
‘Our screen industry is the most effective calling card our country has internationally’: Screen Australia’s CEO has expressed enthusiasm for a full-length project (Paul Hogan and Margot Robbie pictured filming the Superbowl trailer)
He added: ‘Our screen industry is the most effective calling card our country has internationally. Our screen stories show the world our landscapes, our people, our culture and, of course, our creativity.’
Meanwhile, the Northern Territory’s Chief Minister Michael Gunner also says he’d like to see the project get off the ground.
In an interview with The NT News he said: ‘(The original Crocodile Dundee) showcased the beauty, adventure and fun of the Northern Territory – it was great for international tourism and created local jobs’
Starring role: Hugh Jackman plays the Australian Prime Minister in the trailer set to air to an audience of 100 million during Monday’s Superbowl
What a cast! Margot Robbie joins Russell Crowe, Isla Fisher and Ruby Rose in the trailer
‘We want to see more movies showcasing the Northern Territory, and supporting our talented people like Miranda Tapsell, Jess Mauboy, Rob Collins and Warwick Thornton,’ he continued.
Jessica has a small part in the Super Bowl trailer, which also features Margot Robbie, Isla Fisher, Hugh Jackman and Chris Hemsworth among others.
The original Crocodile Dundee film was released in 1986 and made its star Paul Hogan into an international sensation, raking in $328 million at the U.S. box office.
Ready to be seen by the world! Jessica’s face will beam into the living rooms of Americans when the trailer airs on Monday morning
If social media predictions are accurate, the new trailer could be one of Tourism Australia’s most expensive single ads ever.
It has been reported that a slot during the football game would cost around $6.23million (USD $5 million).
That would cost Australian taxpayers $207,000 per second for a 30 second slot during the broadcast.
The eye-watering price tag comes on top of the filming, location, and cast costs such an advert would entail.
