Crime Watch Daily looks into NFL star’s girlfriend’s death

Crime Watch Daily with Chris Hansen will show ‘An Ex-NFL Player, a Scorned Mistress, and the Undercover Sting That Unraveled It All’ on Monday to share the details surrounding the brutal killing of Chicago Bears star Shaun Gayle’s girlfriend, Rhoni Reuter

The story of the obsessed lover who murdered the pregnant girlfriend of former Chicago Bears star Shaun Gayle is being explored by Crime Watch Daily.

Crime Watch Daily with Chris Hansen will show ‘An Ex-NFL Player, a Scorned Mistress, and the Undercover Sting That Unraveled It All’ on Monday to detail the brutal 2007 killing of Rhoni Reuter.

‘The first shot appeared to be targeted right at her stomach,’ retired Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Detective George Filenko said to Crime Watch Daily .

Lake County Assistant State Attorney Ari Fisz added: ‘This is about as evil as it gets,’

A list of 17 women had been gathered at the murder scene as women who Gayle had been seeing while dating Reuter.

Investigators received a tip and homed in on one name in particular: Marni Yang.

Yang had purchased a book on how to make a homemade silencer, had receipts for materials needed for a silencer and had rented a vehicle similar to the one witnesses saw fleeing the scene.

The special even includes footage from Home Depot showing Yang buying the materials she would use to kill Reuter.

Christi Paschen, Yang’s best friend, would be the final piece to the puzzle in the capture of Yang.

‘Christi Paschen pretty much knew everything… Christi agreed to wear a body wire and have a conversation with Marni and record the conversation,’ Fisz explained.

Crime Watch Daily has exclusive audio of the conversation between the two friends where Paschen was wearing a wire.

‘It was so dark that I wasn’t even positive I was making straight shots…I just took that one last shot and I finished her off,’ Yang can be heard saying to Paschen.

Yang apparently went through lots of preparation to pull off the killing.  She was said to have worn dark face paint and a wig during the murder.

‘This was the most premediated and carefully executed crime I’ve ever seen,’ Fisz asserted.

Marni Yang was convicted in March 2011 of shooting dead Rhoni Reuter and her unborn baby at her Illinois home in what prosecutors described as a ‘carefully-planned execution’. She was given a life sentence.

A jury issued a $40million verdict against Yang in a civil case brought by Reuter’s family.

Two of the bullets hit her womb, killing the unborn baby, who she had already named Skylar Reyne.

Reuter had been dating Gayle, a 1985 Super Bowl winner, for 17 years. He met Yang in 2005, and the two began having an on-off sexual relationship. They had slept together at Gayle's home the night before the murder

The next morning Yang drove to  Reuter’s Deerfield home, wearing a disguise. When Reuter opened the door of her condominium to go to work, Yang opened fire.

She was convicted in March 2011 of first-degree murder and the intentional homicide of an unborn child.

The case only came to trial after she confessed to her best friend, Christie Paschen. She went to police and then agreed to wear a wire.

In a tape played to the court, she said: ‘I took the first shot. I remember screaming cause at that point I realised we are now at the point of no return.

‘All she was doing was screaming until she went down, and then when she went down she took her foot and she took one good kick at me, got me in the shin.

‘It was like weak by that time. And that was it. I just, I, took one last shot, in the head – finished her off. And I took off.’

A judge handed down two consecutive life sentences, telling Yang: ‘What makes it different, Miss Yang, is the methodical, meticulous and maniacal manner in which you committed this crime. As a result, two people are lost forever.’
