Pink battles through flu to national anthem at Super Bowl

Pink battled through the flu to perform a stirring rendition of the American national anthem at the Super Bowl.

The 38-year-old singer performed on Sunday at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis after being struck down with illness.

She delivered a flawless rendition, despite being concerned about the quality of her voice before the show.

While her singing was on point, she was caught out spitting gum into her hand just moments before the song started.

Fans were quick to react to the amusing moment on social media, with one fan tweeting: ‘Did Pink just take her gum out on the field? Someone gonna pick that up before game start?’

Another user, @SopanDeb, added: ‘oh my god that gum Pink just took out of her mouth is going to win MVP.’

Pink had previously blamed her children, Willow, six and Jameson, 13 months, for making her sick.

She shared a picture of herself rehearsing on Instagram and wrote: ‘Trying to practice the flu away. I’ve been waiting to sing this song since 1991 when I saw my idol, Whitney Houston, own this song. And now, my chance has finally come. And it just so happens that this chance comes when I have two small Petri dish kids who literally cough INTO MY MOUTH and rub their snot on my cheek. You can’t write this stuff I swear!

‘And here we are. I’ve arrived at another one of my dreams which is slowly becoming a sort of nightmare. I will tell you, this is one of the biggest honors of my life, singing this song in front of my family, my military family, my dad and brother and step mama and family and the world. And the EAGLES!?!?!

‘I promise I will do my best, as I always do. As far as the gremlins that got me into this mess, you can cough at me for the rest of your lives. If it’s a contest, babies, you win. #spreadthelove #spreadthegerms #pleasegivememyvoiceback #ificansingimgonnakillit (sic).’

The national anthem has previously been sung at the Super Bowl by the likes of Lady Gaga, Idina Menzel, Alicia Keys, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Neil Diamond, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Cher, Faith Hill, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé and Christina Aguilera.
