Waleed Aly has been sensationally scorched by an interviewee on The Project.

Speaking to economist Stephen Duckett on the show on Monday, the controversial host was the butt of a joke gone awry.

Dr Duckett was on the show to speak about the privacy of hospital safety data, and whether or not it should be made public.

The show took a slippery turn when Peter Helliar jumped in and threw his co-host under the bus.

‘Doctor, Waleed has just been in hospital. I’m not sure what for, I think it was cosmetic. He still looks a bit dodgy to me,’ Helliar said.

‘Should I keep my distance?’

Without hesitation, Dr Duckett quipped back saying ‘Well, some might say you should always keep your distance from Waleed’.

Carrie Bickmore ran with the joke, saying ‘that’s a medical diagnosis there’.

Waleed Aly appeared offended, but took it in stride asking: ‘what did I do to you?’
