When it comes to fashion, New York and LA are usually lauded as the most stylish cities in American.
But one vlogger on a ‘street style quest’ is revealing just how different other US cities are when it comes to fashion, by travelling across the country to get a makeover in each place.
Safiya Nygaard, 26, from Los Angeles, chose to visit Miami, Dallas and Portland, and revealed on YouTube that she had been ‘curios about regional style’ for a long time, so wanted to team up with locals to ‘craft’ some head-to-toe looks.

Safiya enlisted the help of some local bloggers to ensure her makeovers were as authentic as possible, and called upon Kelly Saks in Miami, Amy Havins in Dallas, and Tonya Smith in Portland.
‘Now of course you can’t boil down an entire city’s style into one outfit, but we’re going to try and get a sense of of the general vibes and feel of the city.’
Miami
Staying in ‘super fun’ South Beach, Safiya shared how she saw a lot of beachwear on her trip to Miami, so to get more insight, teamed up with fashion blogger Kelly Saks.
Born and raised in Miami, Kelly brought Safiya to a store called Boho Hunter in the Wynwood neighborhood.
Explaining that she wanted an everyday street wear look, Safiya shared that she wanted an outfit that would draw on the characteristics of the city, ‘something that somebody could wear on a day-to-day basis’.

‘Miami style is very heavily influenced by Latin America,’ Kelly explained. ‘It’s spicy, it’s sexy, and it’s vibrant.’
‘I think I realized pretty quickly that I wasn’t going to be leaving Miami with an all-black outfit,’ Safiya added, despite admitting she usually feels out of her comfort-zone in color.
Picking out lots of ‘daytime sets’, Safiya then headed to the fitting room to try on a selection of outfits, and ended up having a ‘bunch’ of different options to choose from, including daytime pyjamas, a fringed off-shoulder midi dress and a navy and white crop top and cropped trouser two-piece.
‘Eye-catching accessories’ completed the looks.
Safiya picked the two-piece set as her favorite look.
She then headed to another store, Style Mafia, with Kelly, to try on more items, however they settled on the two-piece, and Kelly advised her to accessorize with gold sandals, gold accessories and dewy make-up.
‘Definitely the fabric and the pattern are fiving me beachy vibes,’ Safiya concluded, despite stepping out in the flimsy outfit on a cold January day.
And she also shared that she was looking forward to wearing it in LA, as it would also work on a west coast beach.
Dallas
Next up, Safiya and her boyfriend/camera guy headed to the Uptown neighborhood in Dallas.
There she met up with fashion blogger Amy Havens who brought Safiya to a store named Market, in the Highland Park Village area, to try on a range of button down shirts.
‘Dallas style is classic, sophisticated, with just a tiny but of edge,’ Amy explained.
‘It looks classic and really put together,’ she added, referencing a shirt she picked out for Safiya to try on with some jeans.
Armed with a ‘dumpster of denim’, Safiya was also given some over-the-knee boots to try on with her outfit.

Cozy: She also tried on some statement knits during her Dallas makeover
Moving onto accessories, Amy shared that ‘in Dallas, accessories are so important to your outfit, because you can take the simplest outfit and just throw on a beautiful earring or a fun bracelet or a cool necklace, and it completes the look.’
Amy also armed Safiya with some party dress options but they ultimately settled on a more casual look to encapsulate Dallas style – a pair of blue jeans worn with a blue and white stripe button down shirt, brown over-the-knee boots and a tan tote.
Statement earrings finished off the look, and Amy instructed Safiya to keep her make-up natural with ‘a nude lip, soft eye and bronzer’.
Safiya added: ‘I do think this outfit that we put together fits Amy’s “outfit with an edge description”. I think the earrings bring a little extra something and I think also, the height of the boots.’
Portland
For their third and final stop, Safiya headed to the Pearl district of Portland, Oregon, where she met up with blogger Tonya Smith.
Heading to House of Vintage, Tonya explained that it’s a ‘really popular place for locals to go and go thrifting’.
Using flannels as their starting point, Tonya helped Safiya pick out some looks and explained that as Portland is very ‘sustainable as a city, thrifting goes hand-in-hand with that’.
Agreeing that the quintessential colors for flannel shirts are red and green, Safiya and Tonya picked out a couple of options before moving onto jeans.
They selected some Levi jeans and then looked for a vintage graphic t-shirt before spotting some denim jackets.
‘It seems like denim is also pretty popular in Portland,’ Safiya concluded. ‘But overall it has a bit of a different feel from the denim in Dallas.’
Lumberjack: Safiya’s Portland look consisted of a flannel shirt, jeans, band t-shirt and boots
Thrifty: She visited vintage and thrift stores with local fashion blogger Tonya Smith to find the best ‘sustainable’ bargains
And Tonya shared how in Portland, what you wear on a hike during the day is also perfect for wearing to a bar later that evening.
‘The lumberjack vibes were plentifull,’ Safiya told the camera as she tried on a selection of flannel shirt and denim looks. ‘I feel pretty rugged’.
Opting for a green flannel, Safiya teamed it with a pair of button-fly jeans, a vintage band t-shirt, and a shearling-lined denim jacket.
They also headed to another vintage store called Red Light to get a t-shirt for the outfit, picking one featuring The Who.
Recommending natural make-up, Tonya also advised Safiya do a cat eye and team a brown leather cross-body tool bag with her outfit.
‘I think we were capturing that Porland outdoorsy theme, even if I’m not really equipped for mountain life,’ Safiya shared.
