Adam Lallana sent off in Liverpool Under 23 game

  • The England international grabbed Marsh around the neck from behind
  • Lallana had to be restrained by team-mate Danny Ings in the aftermath

Adam Lallana’s latest Liverpool comeback has been curtailed after he was sent off for a violent reaction to a challenge while playing for the Under 23 side against Tottenham.

Lallana appeared to be hurt after contesting for a header with Tottenham’s George Marsh. The challenge appeared innocuous but as Marsh turned to follow play, Lallana ran up to him and grabbed him from behind, pushing his forearm into the back of his neck.

The incident in the 63rd minute caused a minor confrontation between both sets of players, with a livid Lallana being led away from the incident by Danny Ings.

But the midfielder should still be available for Liverpool’s Premier League match at Southampton on Sunday.

While Football Association rules state a three-match ban will have to be served for violent conduct, it will be served in non-first team matches. He will not be able to take part in any other Under 23 games for the duration of his suspension.

Jack Wilshere was not banned from Arsenal’s first-team when he was sent off in an Under 23 match against Manchester City in August.

The 29-year-old was playing for Liverpool’s youth side to build up his fitness after an injury hit 2018-19 campaign.

A thigh injury meant he made his first appearance of the season on November 25 against Chelsea, but he didn’t feature again until December 17.

He has only made seven appearances in total for Liverpool so far and needs a strong finish to the season to cement his place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup in Russia.

Liverpool lost the match 1-0, finishing with nine men after George Johnston was also dismissed after a second yellow.
