Police drag Gold Coast man off flight charge him with rape

A 47-year-old man has been dramatically pulled off his flight to New Zealand and charged with rape.

On Monday morning, a 37-year-old woman reported to police she had been raped at a home in Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast the day before.

Moments later, the accused was reported to be boarding a plane to Auckland, New Zealand at the airport.

A man was dragged off a flight heading from the Gold Coast in Queensland to Auckland, New Zealand, by police on Monday

State and Federal police at the Gold Coast airport quickly interrupted the man’s travel plans, removing him from the flight.

Instead, he spent the night in a police jail cell, charged with one count of rape.

The Robina man, who works as a personal trainer, faced the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where he was granted bail, The Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

Duty lawyer Dave Garratt told the court the man had recently signed a year-long lease on his home, which meant he was not likely to flee the country.

The man, who moved from New Zealand more than 10 years ago, has been ordered to surrender his passport, which the court heard he was willing to do during his application.

He will also need to report to police regularly and have no contact with the victim.

Officers pulled him on to the tarmac, where he was charged with one count of bail. He received bail on Tuesday
