Man jailed for nine years over knife-point sex attack

A man has been jailed for at least nine years for subjecting a woman to a terrifying sex attack while he wielded a carving knife in a locked and barricaded NSW house.

Stanley Robin Doolan had earlier threatened the woman’s companion, telling him to rape her, before the man managed to escape from the house in Bathurst, in the state’s central west, in October 2015.

In setting a maximum term of 12 years in the District Court in Sydney on Tuesday, Judge John Pickering said it was clearly a highly terrifying incident for the 54-year-old woman who was forced at knifepoint to engage in two separate sex acts.

Doolan, 35, had pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault and threatening to inflict actual bodily harm on the woman, in addition to using a knife to cause her companion to fear physical harm.

In 2003, Doolan was jailed for at least nine years for aggravated break and enter and aggravated sexual intercourse without consent. He was released on parole in November 2011.

The judge noted there was some similarity between the level of violence and sexual degradation inflicted on both female victims.

In his evidence before sentence on Tuesday, Doolan said he respected women but alcohol, drugs and mental health issues led him to offend.

While he had no memory of the 2015 attack, he said he took full responsibility for it and was sorry and saddened by his ‘stupid behaviour’.

According to the agreed facts, Doolan and the two victims were at a house in Bathurst when Doolan threw $10 at the man to buy cask wine from a neighbour.

Later, after litres of wine, Doolan demanded the man return his $10.

Taking a 30-centimetre-long carving knife and a carving fork from the kitchen he ‘kept screaming about the money and yelled that he was going to kill (the man and woman)’ unless he got his money back. Then he locked the doors to the house.

Doolan told the pair to go to the bedroom and he tried to force the man to have sex with the woman.

The man refused and ran from the house to seek help with Doolan grabbing at his legs as he ran through the door.

Doolan then barricaded the front door with a couch and forced the woman to perform a sex act on him.

When she refused he ‘would slap her with the knife blade in the forehead’, the facts state.

She was ‘crying and shaking’ and could hear people banging on the door.

Judge Pickering noted the victim impact statements in which the man and woman both spoke of their nightmares, while she said she had to move away from Bathurst and he said he had to move from the house.
