The top kitchen trends of 2018 revealed

In 2017, kitchen renovations were all about greenery, charcoal palettes and a minimalist vibe. 

But in 2018, homeowners have embraced a number of new and exciting trends with their kitchens including clutter-cutting cabinets, quartz surfaces and wide open spaces.

Here, FEMAIL looks at some of the findings in Houzz Australia’s new Kitchen Trend report as it’s found Australians are now spending an average of $19,300 on renovations in a bid to create their dream kitchen space.

One of the key findings in the report is that reducing clutter is a top motivation for upgrading cabinets during kitchen renovations.

‘The most popular built-in cabinet storage includes cutlery organisers, deep drawer organisers, and pull-out waste or recycling cabinets,’ they explained. 

Custom cabinets are the most popular followed by semi-custom creations and ready-to-assemble cabinets.

In terms of flooring materials, stained or stained hardwood has topped the list as the most popular followed by ceramic or porcelain tiles (18 per cent) and engineered wood (14 per cent).    

For surfaces, however, engineered quartz is the leading material (34 per cent) followed by laminate and granite. 

Colour palettes are relatively varied but shades of white and grey are the first and second most popular shades respectively. 

White continues to lead as the most likely colour for walls (59 per cent), cabinetry (59 per cent), benchtops (32 per cent) and backsplashes (37 per cent).

Grey appears on 16 per cent of walls, nine per cent of cabinetry, 22 per cent of benchtops and 15 per cent of backsplashes.

For walls, beige followed closely behind grey, with the shade appearing on 14 per cent of walls. 

For major features installed in kitchens, the three top built-ins are islands, pantries and breakfast bars, with islands the most popular​ for homeowners between the ages of 35 and 54 (50 per cent) versus those under 35 and over 55 (45 and 39 per cent, respectively).

What are the most popular cooktops?  

1. Gas (47 per cent) 

2. Induction (21 per cent) 

3. Electric (13 per cent)  

L-shaped and U-shaped layouts are the most in-demand (both with 27 per cent) followed by Galley shaped (16 percent).

Style-wise, contemporary styles are a hit for 2018, followed by modern, traditional, country, Scandinavian and industrial styles. 

The least popular styles are beach style and transitional. 

Finally, when it comes to hi-tech gadgets, colour touchscreen displays are the most popular (12 per cent) followed by built-in apps with recipes and wireless controls.
